What is Hypothermia?
Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, causing the body temperature to drop dangerously low. Shivering, confusion, and slurred speech are early signs of hypothermia, which can lead to unconsciousness and even death if left untreated.
PPE to Prevent Hypothermia:
Thermal Base Layers: The first layer of defense against the cold is moisture-wicking, thermal base layers. They keep sweat away from the skin, which prevents the chill from setting in.
Windproof and Waterproof Jackets: Outerwear should be insulated and resistant to both wind and water, ensuring workers stay dry and warm throughout the day.
Heat Retention Boots: Cold, wet feet contribute to heat loss. Thermal, insulated boots with waterproof outer layers protect against snow and ice while trapping heat.
Make sure to visit Basin Safety Consulting at our Williston and Dickinson locations to prepare for the long North Dakota winter. We’ll help you find the best PPE to ensure your workers stay warm and safe throughout the season.
