4 areas explored in bloodborne pathogen training

April 05, 20222 min read

Bloodborne pathogens are infectious organisms that can be found in human blood. These organisms can often cause life-threatening diseases in humans. Nurses and other health care personnel are always well trained in safety measures to prevent the spread of bloodborne pathogens. However, these skills are just as important in other industries.

A work-related injury or exposure to human waste can unexpectedly expose workers to bloodborne pathogens at any time. That’s why it is important to make sure your team is trained in the proper ways to prevent the spread of infection and disease from bloodborne pathogens.

What are the dangers from bloodborne pathogens?

Human blood and other bodily fluids can host many dangerous organisms, even from a seemingly healthy person. Open sores, cuts and sexual contact can all spread these organisms. Some of the most common concerns include:

  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV).

  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV).

  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

What is covered in bloodborne pathogen training?

While practices may vary between industries, there are a few key areas that must always be covered in any bloodborne pathogen training course. These include:

  1. Standard precautions — This includes treating all bodily fluids as if they are infectious. Workers should take precautions to protect themselves from exposure to any fluid that may have come from inside the body.

  2. Implementing controls — Workers should have immediate access to control measures. This includes sharps disposal containers, as well as hazardous material disposal containers. They should be able to recognize each and know how to properly dispose of materials.

  3. Recognizing signage — Workers should become familiar with all labels used to communicate hazards. This includes waste containers, refrigerators and freezers containing blood, and possibly contaminated equipment.

  4. Personal protective equipment — The use of personal protective equipment should be covered. This can include things as small as sterile rubber gloves or as large as hazardous material suits.
