When a ladder is used correctly, it’s one of the most effective tools on a job site. But when it’s used improperly? It becomes a serious fall hazard. At Basin Safety, our mission is to protect workers by promoting smart, compliant, and consistent safety practices—starting from the ground up.
With Ladder Safety Awareness Month underway, there’s no better time to review your team’s approach to ladder use.
Each year, thousands of workers suffer injuries due to ladder-related falls—many of which could have been prevented with basic safety steps. Whether you’re a supervisor or a frontline employee, you have a role in stopping unsafe habits before they lead to harm.
Set Up on Stable Ground
Always place ladders on flat, dry, and non-slippery surfaces. Avoid soft soil, ice, or oil-slick areas.
Maintain Three Points of Contact
Hands and feet should be in contact with the ladder at all times when climbing. No shortcuts.
Don’t Overreach
If something is out of reach, reposition the ladder instead of leaning dangerously.
Carry Tools Properly
Use tool belts or hoist lines instead of carrying items in hand while climbing.
Inspect Before Each Use
Check for broken rungs, bent rails, and signs of wear. Damaged ladders must be removed from service immediately.
Basin Safety encourages companies to comply with OSHA ladder safety guidelines, including:
Selecting the right ladder height and duty rating.
Ensuring ladders extend 3 feet above landing surfaces.
Training employees on proper use, storage, and inspection procedures.
Lack of training is one of the top contributors to ladder incidents. Investing in regular ladder safety training is a low-cost, high-impact solution.
At Basin Safety, we believe every ladder injury is preventable. Let’s work together to make sure your team has the tools, training, and habits needed to climb with confidence—safely and effectively.
